Information on sports and leisure facilities for people with disabilities

Posted in Leisure | 13 January 2012 - 11:04am

In the US the current American disabilities act has given a mandate that leisure centres and sports organisations should make their facilities more accessible to disabled people, such as a universal design for more accessible facilities in leisure centres that meet everyone’s requirements such as ramps and lifts. They say this is not just good for business but it is also the morally right thing to do. In Britain and more appropriately Essex, local councils for leisure and social services departments should have details about facilities, sports clubs and other recreational pass-times, that are available for people with any kind of disability. Many organisations and groups are dedicated to different sports such as tennis, swimming and athletics; sports and leisure centres by law, should be committed to involving and supporting disabled people in whatever their leisure interests may be. The disability and equality act 2010 which covers all public services including the right to take part in sport and leisure activities,(which can be found on the government website www.directgov.com) are designed so that people with disabilities, and their carer’s and families are not discriminated against by non disabled people who may feel they are above the law. Although it can be very difficult for disabled people to take part in many sports and leisure activities depending on the severity of their disability. Everyone including people with disabilities should have the freedom to take part in any sport and leisure activities that they feel they want to.
