Newly founded charity, iCAN Experiences, is dedicated to providing exciting life experiences for disabled people. From extreme sports and exhilarating activities to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, they are the only charity in the UK specialising in experience days for people with disabilities.
There are many general experience providers in the UK, but for disabled individuals, it can sometimes be difficult to identify which activities would be suitable. There is also the problem that not all places have the facilities required to cater for people needing special requirements.
Oxfordshire man, Paul Nicol, set up the charity after being diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease and becoming blind at the age of 23. His own experiences led him to found the charity as a way of helping others take part in extreme sports. He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, gone whitewater rafting, bungee jumped and even tried tandem skydiving.
"It's about proving to myself that I can still do it and that's really what's driven me," says Mr Nicol
iCAN offers a vast range of activities. These include bungee jumping, off road experiences, kayaking, skydiving, base jumping, hang-gliding and rally driving. However, they also offer less adrenalin-inducing pursuits such as a personal shopping experience, archery, and a birds of prey exercise. They hope to offer something for everyone.
Some activities are better suited to different disabilities, and not all are open to everyone. However, iCAN is eager to work with people’s individual needs, and find everyone the right experience for them.
“We want to help people with disabilities feel confident that they can enjoy the same activities and life experiences as someone without a disability.”
