When most lads their age are still arriving home from the night before or still sleeping it off Colchester Utd Deaf FC are up and about with a bang. And they are a determined group, keen to show that a loss of partial or full hearing just made them even more skilled on the football pitch.
Playing football can be hard enough and playing without the sense of hearing adds further difficulty but it seems that football comes naturally to this group of lads and they have football talent in abundance.
Set up over five years ago primarily but not inclusively for those with a hearing impairment, they play in the Colchester & District Men's Sunday League. And Col Utd Deaf are really on the up. From Division 6 three years ago Col Utd Deaf are now in Division 3 and still on the rise.
Are you interested in just getting fitter and having fun playing a sport you love? Why not give it a go?
It's not all about the football; there is a social side to 'boot'. If playing is not for you but you just want to watch, Colchester Utd Deaf play their home games at Shrub End Playing Fields, Boadicea Way, Colchester. Why not go down and give your support.
