Carers Week 2017

(12th to 18th June) is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the invaluable contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

So we hope you will join us in raising awareness of the over 17,500 Carers living & caring in Southend-on-Sea, who everyday look after their loved ones.

This year Southend Carers will be hosting events for carers to come along to, take a break & have some fun including information stands in the town centre, a “Zest, Rest & De-Stress” Day, Fun Walk on the Pier & Bingo Night.

Bereavement by Suicide Support

Facing the Future offers FREE peer-to-peer support groups for those bereaved through suicide. Support groups are available in:
Basildon
Southend

Included at the bottom of this story are links to our information booklet and poster for review. Please feel free to display these and/or share them with others.

As a service invested in promoting and enhancing wellbeing, we hope you’ll consider introducing Facing the Future to those bereaved by suicide who are looking for support.The groups are completely free, limited to a maximum of eight people and delivered for six consecutive weeks. Individuals can self-refer.

Facilitated by a Cruse and Samaritans volunteer specialising in support around suicide and bereavement, the groups enable individuals bereaved by suicide to share their experiences with others in a safe, confidential space.

The groups have been designed to be as inclusive as possible: Those eligible to attend will be over 18 and bereaved by suicide for 3 months or longer.

Individuals do not have to reside in areas where the groups are located.

Community Theatre Project

CapaTaro, an emerging theatre company based in Southend-on-Sea, is excited to announce that its project, Hey Billy, this is just the beginning! – a new community play for Southend, has been funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and as part of Southend Borough Council’s125th Anniversary Celebrations.

We would like to invite people from across the community to participate in this project in any and every way possible. Our theatre is open to everyone, and a community play can only be made when the community is involved!

In response to Billy Bragg’s words, ‘Southend’s the end’ in his hit song A13, Trunk Road to the Sea, we say, “Hey Billy, this is just the beginning, we just see it from a different perspective!”

So what’s next, and how can you get involved?

  • You can tell us a story about yourself and Southend’s past, present or future. Contact us by email capatarotheatreco@gmail.com look out for our postcards in the library, SAVS and The Old waterworks.
  • You could join the specially created Southend People’s Choir which will meet at The Old Waterworks, North Road, Southend-on-Sea SS0 7AB every Tuesday from the 20th of June (6pm – 8pm).
  • And you can participate in the Theatre Workshops led by friendly theatre practitioners every Sunday from the 2nd of July at the Clifftown Theatre, Nelson Mews, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1EF (2 pm – 4 pm).

The choir and the theatre workshops are drop-in activities and you don’t need any experience – everyone is welcome.

PinpointCreate mark Borough’s 125th anniversary with new outdoor production.

Arts organisation PinpointCreate are working in conjunction with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to produce a free, live performance with storytelling, theatre and music to celebrate moments in time throughout Southend-on-Sea’s 125 years as an incorporated borough.

The performance explores how Southend-on-Sea has developed since 1892, presenting stories of the people who visited or settled in the town over the years since then. The title Per Mare per Ecclesiam, and inspiration for this performance comes from Southend-on-Sea’s Coat of Arms and motto.

There will be performances at 4pm and 6pm on Saturday 10 June at Belfairs Woodland Centre in Belfairs Woods. Free tickets can be obtained from www.eventbrite.co.uk

Universal Credit Full Service in Southend

Universal Credit is being rolled out across the country.
In November 2014 we started to test the Universal Credit Full Service with claimants in Sutton. The enhanced full service lets us test and learn how Universal Credit works with the full range of claimants, no matter how complex their needs or circumstances in a digital environment.
This gradual approach will provide the best level of support for claimants as we continue to test the service. The learning from this test will inform the future development of our enhanced full service as we roll out Universal Credit across Great Britain.

As part of this expansion, will we be rolling out Universal Credit full service in the Southend area from 19th July 2017.

Before launching the Full Service within Southend we will be raising the awareness of Universal Credit. We will be working closely with all our key stakeholders including social landlords and voluntary sector organisations as we know the key to delivering Universal Credit successfully is in building strong relationships locally.

We would therefore like to invite you to an introductory meeting on Wednesday 14th June 2017 at 10am and finishing by 1.30pm at Southend Jobcentre. The meeting will provide you with an opportunity to learn about Universal Credit Full Service, as well as offering you the chance to raise any questions.

We really hope you will be able to participate in the discussion and learn more about how you and your customers may be affected.

Mental Health Training

MHT 1 (Mental health training one) is a whole day course running at the Minds Jubilee centre in Southend. The course is suitable for anyone wanting to know more about mental health.
The course includes;

  • How to recognise signs & symptoms of mental ill-health
  • To be able to gain an understanding of mental health diagnoses
  • To gain a basic understanding of treatments for common mental health problems
  • Develop ways of approaching someone struggling with their mental health
  • Increase knowledge of local service providers and where to signpost someone with mental health difficulties

This course is running on Monday 19th June 2017 9.30 till 4pm £60 per delegate
MHT2 (Mental health training two) is an advanced training course that runs at Mind Jubilee centre. To attend this course you need to have completed MH1 within the last year.
The course includes;

  • An in depth awareness of treatment for mental health.
  • An in depth knowledge about self-harm and suicide and how to work with someone experiencing distress.
  • To gain an understanding of psychosis.
  • An understanding of how media affects mental health.

Trustee Roles & Responsibilities

Is your board fit for purpose? This one day course on the 6th July in Chelmsford is designed to support both novice and experienced trustees in providing effective governance within their organisations. It considers their roles and responsibilities in general before looking at particular areas in more detail. The course covers all the essential information and includes specific exercises and case studies to develop the participants’ problem-solving skills.

BBC Children in Need Main Grant Programme (Deadline 1 September 2017)

Grants of over £10,000 per project are available to not for profit organisations and schools that work with young people who are experiencing disadvantage through: illness, distress, abuse or neglect; any kind of disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties; and / or living in poverty or situations of deprivation. Schools can also apply for funding but the project must be additional to their statutory duties. Funding to Support Arts Projects (Deadline 1 October 2017)

Grants of up to £5,000 are available to help individuals and organisations such as Colleges, Arts Festivals and other arts organisations carry out arts projects; in particular music projects including Opera, Lieder, Composition and Dance. The funding can be used to pay for tuition or coaching costs, to participate in external competitions, to support a specially arranged performance and for a special publication, musical composition or work of art. Dulverton Trust Grant

The Trust prefers to support medium sized charities (with an income of £200,000 to £5million) where their grant can make a difference and will also consider applications from newly registered charities. The trust currently supports a wide range of activities in the following categories: Youth Opportunities, General Welfare, Conservation and Preservation. Priority will be given to projects which are open to all members of the community. Trustees meet three times a year to consider grant proposals: in February, June and October. Applications can however be submitted at any time. The Trust also operates a Minor grants programme, providing funding of up to £5,000 for locally operating charities with an income below £200,000. Funding for Young People to Develop Social Enterprises (UK)

UnLtd, in partnership with Sports Relief and the Spirit of 2012, has announced that young people who want to start, grow or build their social enterprise idea can apply for funding of up to £15,000.  Young people can apply for a Test it Award of up to £500 or a Build it Award of up to £15,000. Awards can be applied for by an individual or small group of up to four people aged 11-30.  Test it Awards provide young people with the chance to unlock their potential and make a positive difference in the community. The Test it Awards are available to 200 young people to run their own projects.  There is a on stage application process for Test It Awards. Community Business Fund Due to Re-Open for Applications (deadline 5 July 2017)

Power to Change, which supports community businesses, has announced that its £10 million Community Business Fund will re-open for applications on the 7th June 2017. Power to Change will be awarding grants between £50,000- £300,000 to support and develop local community businesses in England that work for the benefit of the local community. To be eligible for funding applicants need to be incorporated (rather than as a collection of individuals) and funding will be available for both capital and revenue costs. Move-on Co-ordinator (Hostels and Supported Housing)

Salary: Starting at Point 26, £23,398 rising incrementally to Point 28, £24,964 per annum

We are looking to recruit an experienced co-ordinator for our Lottery Funded ‘Transitions’ accommodation services in Southend. Reporting to a Service Manager, you will be responsible for the management of a team of front-line staff in a high-support hostel service and step-down hostels leading to move-on to independent living. You will work with and deputise for the Service Manager to ensure that a recovery focussed service is provided to service users and that the service is operated in line with HARP values, procedures and legal requirements and that it meets the funder’s and service user’ needs.

To be considered for this role, you will need the demonstrable ability to lead a staff team to deliver a highly effective, client centred accommodation service for service users with multiple and complex needs that include substance use and mental health and the ability to take day to day responsibility for the property and other service resources. This experience must include the holistic assessment of need, support and risk, and multi-agency casework planning.

You will also have excellent and demonstrable skills in the monitoring, accuracy of data and evaluation of the project to provide monthly reports to HARP and the Big Lottery Fund.

Organised, adaptable, and an excellent communicator, you will be enthusiastic about working in a psychologically informed environment, and creative in your approach to service delivery. You are resilient in, and motivated by, a constantly changing and busy environment, and able to motivate and lead others. A good understanding of the regulatory and financial environment within which accommodation based support operates is essential.

We are looking to recruit an experienced person with substantial knowledge of mental health service provision for our Lottery Funded ‘Transitions’ accommodation services in Southend. Reporting to a Team Leader, you will be part of an integrated team of front-line staff based at The Bradbury Centre working to improve long term rough sleeper’s mental health, physical wellbeing to aid the move off the streets into ‘Transitions’ supported housing providing stability and support.

Developing, creating and maintaining partnerships with the voluntary and statutory mental health agencies is a vital component of the role to deliver maximum impact to helping service users sustain their accommodation and achieve a better quality of life.

You will work to ensure that a recovery focussed service is provided to service users and that the service is operated in line with HARP values, procedures and legal requirements and that it meets the funder’s and service user’ needs.

Children, Young People’s and Families’ Caseworker – Full Time

Westcliff based SOS Domestic Abuse Projects is looking for an experienced domestic abuse practitioner to work as part of our Fledgling’s Children, Young People and Families’ team.

Working with Children and troubled families, the ideal candidate will need to be highly motivated and committed to making a difference to the lives of children affected by domestic abuse, and to ensure positive outcomes for them and their families through therapeutic programmes and ongoing support and advocacy.

Relevant experience of working with children and parents is essential, as well as knowledge of and working with, other local agencies and services.  Monitoring and evaluation of service delivery is key in line with the funding requirements for the post.

Salary: Further information upon request, but subject to qualifications and relevant experience.

Hours:37.5 hours per week

Annual leave: Commencing at 25 days per annum
