We are delighted to announce that Braintree and Chelmsford Hockey Clubs have agreed to have their facilities for disabled spectators publicised on our Sports section. Both clubs have many Men’s and Women’s teams that play each week and we hope that they will be the first of many Hockey clubs to join us! Details of each club’s facilities can be seen below.

Braintree Hockey Club

Braintree Hockey Club have been active since 1903 and have grown to a membership of over 450 and currently field four Men’s teams, three Ladies’ teams, a Mixed XI and have a thriving junior section known as the Blue Hornets. All senior teams play at the Four Releet which is situated close by to the A131. The ground offers free parking and ramp access to the modern astro pitch. Spectators are welcome to sit on the benches when watching a match. There is also a wheelchair accessible clubhouse. Braintree Hockey Club is proud to be the only club in the region who run coaching for people with disabilities. The ‘Flyerz’ meet every Tuesday evening to learn the game of Hockey from Neil Cowen who runs the section. They have played in competitions at the national hockey stadium at Lee Valley where England and GB play. Anyone interested in playing or assisting the Flyerz are encouraged to get in touch with either Neil Cowan on 07970 964154 or Chris Card on 07720 725029.

Chelmsford Hockey Club have over 300 active playing members ranging from under 10 to over 70 years of age and are able to field eight men’s teams and five women’s teams each weekend. At Chelmer Park, their home for over 40 years, they are equipped with water-based and sand-based artificial pitches, grass facilities and an impressive clubhouse where they stage regular social events. The clubhouse is accessible via a set of double-doors and there is an accessible toilet based in the changing rooms. The area is also served with a free car park with dedicated disabled parking spaces. The stands have ramp access and all games are free to watch. The club have recently made the impressive announcement that Olympians David Condon and Glenn Kirkham will coach the Ladies first XI this season and so it looks there are exciting times ahead for Chelmsford this season!
