Southend Apple Day

Local mental health and wellbeing charity Trust Links are holding the eighth annual Southend Apple Day event on Saturday at St Laurence Orchard. The community event will be held between 11 am and 2 pm on the 6th October and is entry is free.

Southend Apple Day will feature a range of activities including apple picking, juicing, children’s games, tours of the orchard, music, BBQ and raffle. Musicians from Growing Together will be playing and local groups will have stalls promoting their projects.

It is coming up to 100 years since the historic St Laurence Orchard was planted for World War I veterans. The one acre orchard is now a haven for wildlife and features more than a dozen different varieties of apple trees, many of which originate from Essex.

Matt King, CEO of Trust Links, said “We are really looking forward to welcoming people of all ages to Southend Apple Day this year. We know that being in the great outdoors and connecting with other people is good for people’s mental health and wellbeing, which is what Trust Links is all about. There will be something for everyone at Apple Day, with entertainment and refreshments as well as a chance to explore this important part of Southend’s history.”

Trust Links is a mental health and wellbeing charity, which runs four Growing Together therapeutic community gardens in Westcliff, Shoeburyness, Thundersley and Rochford as well as a carers project and the REACH Recovery College. The charity’s projects support 1,000 people locally each year. Trust Links has been looking after St Laurence Orchard on behalf of Southend Council for 13 years and holds regular work parties to maintain the orchard. Money raised from the event will help run its vital projects throughout the year.
